I want to say thank you so much for the rare privilege I had this year, see U2 twice, on feb 20 and 21, at Morumbi stadium. My dreams come true, and I thought it was totally impossible. But you showed this year the things are possible. U2 playing in South America, you and your wonder cause (Music Rising) supporting New Orleans and area. How I´m so proud of you Edge. The generosity is your trademark as your beanie. You´re so gentle; your humility visiting the devasted areas of New Orleans touched me so high. You´re an example as musician, as human being. The fans say you´re the meaning of the best things in this world and they´re right. You captived me when I heard the first time your sounds. But all your movment (physical, phylosophical) are the key to explain how every U2´s fans all around the world are, simply, passionate for you; all of them have passion for you. And this love is an everlasting love, be sure. Edge´s sounds: yesterday, today and tomorrow! HAPPY 45TH BIRTHDAY EDGE! Sunday Bloody Sunday It was The Edge´s idea to explore the theme, and to link what was happening in Northern Ireland back to the original Christian blood sacrifice and subsequent resurrection on Easter Sunday. "Bono was away on his honeymoon", The Edge recalls. "I wrote the music and hit on an idea for the lyrics and presented it to the band when they got back." Sunday Bloody Sunday was a protest song - not against any one act of violence but against a cycle of violence into which all of the protagonists in the Northern conflict seemed to be locked. During recording, considerable time was spent on the drum part. Watch Sunday Bloody Sunday, here * One In Berlin, working on 'Mysterious Ways', Edge came up with two alternatives and the whole thing was done in 15 minutes...But with 'One' ...'One' is a song about relationships . The implication of guilt, felt by someone who has just walked out on a long-term love..But the song is also a meditation on the extent to which their Berlin sojourn was testing the band´s own sense of unity. 'One' is about the band, also. With the Berlin session in the bag, the tape of 'One' was taken back to Dublin, but it needs foreground (right Edge?). They got a picture of an arrangement that would work. After the 'Love is a temple' section at the end, The Edge said: 'I´ve got this great idea for a guitar riff.' So, on the mix there were three of U2 (with the team) on the desk, the rest of the band vibing around and The Edge at the back of the studio, playing the guitar part live to the half-inch. watch Edge on One to New Orleans (U2 and Mary J Blige), here * Numb 'Numb' was an exercise in surreal humor, capturing the jaded rock star frozen into physical and emotional immobility by the self-imposed strictures of his position. Watch Numb-remix, here. * Miracle Drug 'One of the exciting things about making this album, was that having worked on a lot of different material, having recorded it in various different ways over quite an extended period, as the album started to come into focus at the end, we all started to get a feel for not just the individual songs but the whole collection and how it was all fitting together. At that moment everybody just got so inspired that we wrote a bunch of songs in the last few months and one of them was 'Miracle Drug' which came quite quickly. It is a tune with a lot of resonance and will be one of those songs that will be played in U2 shows for a long time.' by Edge on U2.com.

New population statistics gloomy - Rate of return to area down dramatically - After a string of encouraging months, the return of New Orleanians to the metro area seems to have slowed to barely a trickle in the second quarter of 2006, an analysis of change-of-address forms filed with the U.S. Postal Service shows. THIS DAY - U2´S HISTORY: The Edge was born / 21st - 26th - 32nd - 40th and 44th Edge´s B-Day!!!!

"The Edge"...august 8, 1961. Daved "(Mister)The Edge" Evans was born in Barking Maternity Hospital, east London.

"On 21st Edge´s B-Day" - august 8, 1982. U2 begin working with Steve Lillywhite on their third album in Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin.

"On 26th Edge´s B-Day" - august 8, 1987. U2 perform in Cork, Ireland at Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Before the show, the band meet with Paul McGuinness and some Island Records staff--including tonight's show, the European Leg of the tour is attended by 1,196,830 people. It's The Edge's 26th birthday and Bono starts the show again by walking out and singing to the background track of "Stand By Me". He shouts, "Happy Birthday Edge!" and Bono jams the microphone in front of The Edge, who sings a few lines of the song. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is performed twice--in a row. The crowd sing it so well, Bono starts the song anew. During the bridge of the song, he calls out Irish city names: "Belfast! Derry! Cork! Dublin! Waterford! Galway! Sligo!" while the crowd sing "No More!" after each one. Bono honours the many members of the road crew that come from Cork during "Pride(In the Name of Love)": "I want to sing this for Corkmen...Joe O'Herlihy, for Tim Buckley, for Tom Mullally, for Sammy over here behind the drum kit,...Steve Iredale, because without these people working day in and day out, putting up stages, taking down stages, putting them into trucks, driving the trucks and all in the name of love.." The mood is extremely festive as the band return to the stage for the encore. During "Party Girl" Bono calls out, "Anyone know what The Edge wants? How about a birthday cake?" and a huge cake is wheeled out onto the stage. "So Edge, why don't you just give me the guitar here, and why don't you just try a slice of the birthday cake?" At that moment, Aisling, The Edge's wife, jumps out of the cake and showers everyone on stage with champagne. "My God, Edge...it's the missus!" Bono says to a laughing The Edge. "And what a beautiful party girl she is tonight! The best birthday present you can give Edge is his wife Aisling!" A wild version of "Out of Control" follows "Party Girl", the first time the song has been played on the tour. "40" ends the night, with Bono, Adam, and The Edge walking off stage and leaving Larry drumming. The crew up on the stage, release a hundred ping-pong balls which shower Larry, who laughs at the little joke. Support is "The Dubliners", "The Subterraneans", and "UB40". After the show, the band retire to the south of France for several weeks to relax with their families and write some new material --ostensibly for the next album.

"On 32nd Edge´s B-Day" - august, 8 1993. U2 perform in Glasgow, Scotland at Celtic Park. After the satellite link up Bono sang Happy Birthday to the Edge and made him sing an unrehearsed version of Lost Highway. Most of the crowd felt sorry for him as this was obviously Bono putting him on the spot as he struggled to complete two verses!

"On 40th Edge´s B-Day" - august 08, 2001 / Barcelona, Spain - Palau St. Jordi - Stereophonics. 'Spanish Eyes' makes its Elevation Tour debut, with a full version of the song performed by the entire band. First time it's been played since May 14, 1992's performance in Spain. The crew brings out a birthday cake during Mysterious Ways for the Edge (from the back of the stage appeared 6 pictures of different ages from the edge (Joshua,Pop...) with girls holding a cake.)

David "The Edge" Howell Evans.
Dave 'The Edge' Howell Evans was born in Barking, Essex, in East London, on august 8, 1961, to parents of Welsh descent, Gwenda and Garvin Evans. When he was one year old, the family - which included younger sister Gill and older brother Dick - moved to Dublin, where he has lived ever since. There, he grew up as a quiet kid, a loner and very intelligent. He did well in school, and up until before he met who would be his future bandmates, he wanted to go to the university and become an engineer. It was in the fall of 1976 when he spotted Larry's note on the Mount Temple Comprehensive High School bulletin board, which asked for anyone interested in forming a band. He was the first to respond to the ad, and he went to the first meeting in Larry's house with his brother Dick and their friend, Adam Clayton. Along with Paul Hewson and a few others, this was the first meeting of what would become U2. The Edge showed them he had guitar playing skills that seemed well beyond his age, and the chemistry among them was obvious from the beginning. Early in the band's career, Dave Evans was re-baptized by Bono - then Bono Vox - as 'The Edge'. The nickname was inspired in the beginning by the sharp features of his face, but it also applied to his sharp mind and the way he always observes things from the edge. When he finished high school, he told his parents he'd take a year off, to see where the band and their music would take him. Along with Bono and Larry, The Edge joined a Christian-based religious group called Shalom in the early 1980s. The young men were in search of spirituality and the answer to the big question, and these issues soon became a problem within the band. The three members attending the bible group were torn between their Christian ideals and their rock and roll lifestyle. Larry and Bono quickly chose the band, but the Edge was uncertain. He had a lot of doubts, and nearly left U2 prior to the making of the War album. But he took Bono's advice to follow his heart and after a reasonable period of soul searching, he chose the band as well. The Edge realized he didn't have a problem with his beliefs or his music and lifestyle, it was other people who did. In 1983, Edge married Aislinn O'Sullivan, with whom he remained for 7 years and had three daughters: Holly (1984), Arun (1986), and Blue Angel (1989). In 1990 they separated, and in 1996 they got a legal divorce. He now has a daughter, Sian (1997), and a son, Levi (2000), with Morleigh Steinberg, the belly dancer and choreographer from the ZooTv Tour, whom he started dating in 1993. The two were officially married in June, 2002. The Edge's guitar sound is part of U2's trademark, the characteristic and mesmerizing sounds he plays and the emotions he puts through them are what make him one of the most unique guitarists in rock and roll. His style -- clean, sharp, incisive, cutting-Edge -- is unmistakable. He has often been called an "anti-guitar hero" because of his aversion to the indulgent, solo style of many contemporaries. He's also lent his vocal talents to several U2 songs, first singing lead on "Seconds" from the War album. He later took the lead on songs such as "Van Diemen's Land" and "Numb", and sang a solo version of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" during 1997-98's PopMart Tour. In the last album he sings a verse on "Miracle Drug". Instrument: Guitars, piano, keyboards, vocals and background vocals. Actually, he´s a co-founder of Music Rising a benefit organization to replace the unstruments to New Orleans and area´s musicians, to give back the life, the work in that wonder city; and to support the churches, schools and the community devasted by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. About his beanies: Edge, has been wearing knit caps for years, but it was hip-hop artists who really brought them to the mainstream. Beanies or skullies, as they are also known, fit your head and don't obscure your face or eyes and block your vision; so there is a utility factor, too.

Strong and sweet - DAY 2 - HAPPY 45TH B-DAY EDGE!!!!
"I think of maybe a record like The Unforgettable Fire as having a singular movement and feeling. With Achtung Baby, everything was kind of an individual piece. 'Until the End of the World' was one of the first things we recorded. In fact Bono, I don't think, was even at the sessions at that point, when we did the backing track. When he came back, I think he was really inspired by the backing track and he came up with his melodies over this recording, and his lyrics flowed pretty quickly from that. This song is a case of everything inspiring everyone else. And that's really the best way for us to make a record -- to keep the energy flowing, keep the ideas flowing. It's one of my favorite ever recordings of the band, because everyone shines; Adam and Larry are playing up a storm, I really love the guitar, the solo sound, and Bono turned out a great lyric and great melody."

New Orleans celebrates Armstrong "birthday"
NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Trumpets wailed and tubas boomed as New Orleanians danced in the streets on Sunday, on a weekend celebrating jazz great Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong's birthday and praying for the return of musicians displaced by Hurricane Katrina. "Without Louis Armstrong, we wouldn't really have a clue. He gave us a foundation," said Troy Andrews, known as 'Trombone Shorty', but whose trumpet solos brought down the house during a jazz mass at St. Augustine Catholic Church in the historic Treme neighborhood near the French Quarter. .. Armstrong was an international hit playing jazz trumpet and singing hits such as "What a Wonderful World" and "Hello Dolly." Many New Orleans musicians still revere Armstrong, who was born August 4, 1901 but celebrated his birthday on July 4. He died on July 6, 1971. This year he would have been 105. Musicians strive to make ends meet after Katrina because housing is scarce and expensive, and many smaller music clubs have closed. The storm killed 1,339, according to the National Hurricane Center, and flooded 80 percent of New Orleans. ... Morgan Clevenger, founder of the New Orleans Jazz Legacy Foundation, said the city had begun to appreciate Armstrong in the last few years but needed to work harder to preserve his legacy. From an anti-nuclear song passing for his speeches! The acoustic guitar that opens "Seconds" and drives it was 'The Edge´s idea. "A smart move", Bono observes. "...All this lead guitar stuff never meant much to him." "Seconds" is a tour-de-force from The Edge. For the first time he sings lead vocals. In fact was The Edge´s voice that U2 tended to double-track for harmonies. There was musical irony in the juxtaposition of The Edge´s jaunty acoustic pop confection with lyrics about the imminence of nuclear catastrophe. "The whole spectacle of these girls (a 1982 TV documentary entitled "Soldier Girls") going through this incredible routine of training seemed perfect to slip in here in the middle. It´s not obvious but if you listen close you can hear the refrain: 'I want to be an airborne ranger / I want to live the life of danger'. It´s very disturbing". Edge told Carter Alan on WBCN in 1983. Still, in december 18, 1983, in London, happened "The Big One", a peace concert organised by CND-Campaign of Nuclear Disarmament to protest against American nuclear missiles at Greenham Common. Students are ready, but what about the schools?Parents, children may face a disorganized first day N.O. schools are set to open in August, but problems with staffing and facilities continue. Moton Charter Elementary School Principal Paulette Bruno sat at home on Wednesday, fielding calls from the parents of her 214 registered students, a group still waiting to hear whether they would have a place to start school this week. With the Moton building devastated by Hurricane Katrina, the best that state education officials had been able to offer the new charter school was a set of trailers in the largely abandoned Gentilly Woods neighborhood, a far cry from Moton's 9th Ward campus near the former Desire public housing development. Ceremony Welcomes New Medical Students to New Orleans
Incoming first-year medical students at the Tulane University School of Medicine donned their doctor's white coats for the first time at the Annual White Coat Ceremony held on Monday, August 7 at the Grand Ballroom in the Hilton Riverside Hotel - New Orleans, 2 Poydras St. Approximately 165 new medical students received their white coats, a number slightly higher than the usual 155. According to Marc Kahn, professor of medicine and associate dean for admissions and student affairs, the students were selected out of 7000 applicants. In addition to maintaining academic standards for entry, Kahn and his colleagues were most interested in students who demonstrated social consciousness and a commitment to make a difference in their community. SACHS SLAMS MADONNA CYNICISM
Economic guru JEFFREY SACHS has leaped to the defence of pop superstar MADONNA, insisting her charity efforts in Africa are sincere. The MATERIAL GIRL was spurred to raise at least $3 million (GBP1.7 million) to help orphans in Malawi after reading Sachs' book THE END OF POVERTY, but many have branded her philanthropic efforts nothing more than a publicity stunt. However, Sachs, who has also worked with U2 star BONO and ANGELINA JOLIE, is adamant her intentions are honourable. He says, "Of course there are no doubt people who on a fling say something, but that's not what Madonna's doing, it's not what Angelina's doing, it's not what Bono's doing. More generous tax system in the Netherlands
U2 move business interests abroad - U2 have moved part of their multi-million euro business out of the country to avail of a more generous tax system in the Netherlands. A €250,000 cap on tax exemptions for artists in Ireland, which was brought in as part of the last Budget, has led to the Dublin rockers reconsidering where to base their business. Freedom and justice without violence - DAY 4: HAPPY 45TH BIRTHDAY EDGE!!! "We write songs about what hits us at that time. We wrote a song about Northern Ireland on the "War" album (Sunday Bloody Sunday") and I wrote a song called "Van Diemen´s Land" which touches on that on the new album. I was interested in the history of this character, John Boyle O'Reily. His monument in County Meath. At the entrance to it was this faded brown newspaper clipping which gave the history of his life. How he was a member of the British Army in Ireland. He left the British army and become a Fenian and wrote Fenian poetry. He was arrested by the British Government and was charged with writing material that was deported to Australia for 20 years' hard labour. He was, to me, a prisoner of conscience in a way. He was not a man of violence and he was sent way for 20 years so I wrote a song about that."

Midlands residents have reached out to help give the gift of reading back to New Orleans residents. Local fundraising efforts have generated about $22,000 to help rebuild the New Orleans Public Library system, which was damaged during Hurricane Katrina last fall. The fundraising effort — which was first reported in January — was sponsored by the Association of Public Library Administrators of South Carolina and the Friends of South Carolina Libraries. It was coordinated by Jim Johnson, retired director of the South Carolina State Library. Johnson recently traveled to New Orleans where he presented library officials with a check for $21,700. Stolen U2 tickets lead to probation for Portland man A Portland man who tried to sell stolen tickets to U2 concert at the Rose Garden in December received 18 months' probation Thursday for his theft conviction. Last week, a Multnomah County jury found Guy Edwards, 32, guilty of selling the tickets back to the man from whom they were stolen. Edwards told the jury he did not know they were stolen, but a police detective testified that Edwards had acknowledged when he was arrested that he "kinda knew" the tickets were hot. Spirited sounds - The best of 'religious rock' ... 1) U2, "October" (1981): U2 has never been a Christian rock band, but nearly every single one of its songs deals with the "big questions": "God," spirituality, morality, political injustice, and how love fits into this rather tattered jigsaw we call existence. "October" is a naked and bold collection of religious songs that, to its great artistic advantage, asks far more questions than it suggests answers to. Bono's theme here is a yearning for transcendence, and throughout "October," he speaks of a longing for grace and the challenges imposed by a clearly flawed human self. "Gloria" begs some spiritual force to "loosen my lips," while "I Fall Down" speaks of feelings of moral inadequacy, and "Is That All?" dares to ask the deity just what the heck he wants his "servant" to do with the talent he has been given. It's incredibly passionate and timelessly moving stuff. ... 5) U2, "Pop" (1997): Whoa. On this overlooked and undervalued gem, U2 forged a sound that blended electronica with its own anthemic rock, and married it to startlingly confrontational religious lyrics. Few knew what to make of it. "Discoteque" was ostensibly U2 doing dance-tronica, but a closer listen revealed it to be the cry of a wandering believer longing to come home. And it only got heavier from there, Bono sneering that he was "looking for the baby Jesus under the trash" and "looking for to fill that God-shaped hole," Elsewhere, "Wake Up Dead Man" found the singer admonishing his creator for abandoning the universe. When U2 played new songs in south of France, some Hungarian fans... "we were in Nice two weeks ago, and we went to Eze. We were there when they played these songs... it was amazing. we saw Adam, Edge, Bono, all of their kids, Ali, Morleigh and Suzan and Bono's dog as well. we didn't want to take photos about them, because they had holiday there...and the kids were everywhere...you can understand...we didn't want to be ugly fans....we made only a few picture when there was no kid and no wife around them. We took a picture of Adam, when he was standig with his back to us and we took one about Edge on the day when they were playing the new songs. And we have one about Bono but it's quite bad. Anyway it was amazing... Bono and Edge had some guests (as we know they were The Strokes and some of their friends) and they had dinner on the terrace. Third Vertigo Show For Sydney in November
U2 will play a third show at the Telstra Stadium in Sydney on Monday November 13th. Full details here. U2 broke box office records when tickets went on sale for two Sydney shows in December 2005, the 150,000 tickets available sold out in less than one hour. The announcement of a third show should come as good news to those who missed out last time. Music supergroup U2 is planning to mix pleasure with politics on its November tour of Australia. . The band was said to be planning a Live 8-style concert to coincide with a meeting of world economic leaders in Melbourne. The third concert would be aimed at sending a message to 20 of the world's finance ministers, who will be in Australia for the G20 economic summit. Like the Live 8 concert in London last year, the U2 gig will support the Make Poverty History campaign, a cause close to the heart of singer Bono. The event would be Australia's largest ever charity concert. U2's Australian promoter Michael Coppel was unavailable for comment today, but it seemed a date was already set. The extensive loss of day-care centers could threaten New Orleans' economic recovery, a new report says With 80 percent of New Orleans' licensed child-care centers gone, neighborhoods citywide are lacking a basic service that could impede the city's economic rebirth, according to a study released today. "Child care is critical to an economic recovery and a recovery in general," said Kate Conradt of the Washington, D.C., advocacy group Save the Children, an international nonprofit that commissioned the study to identify ways to work with state and local leaders to improve child care for working parents. Supermodel Helena Christiansen was there tonight, looking elegant in the rain, along with a clutch of other famous faces - princes and footballers and local rock'n roll stars. For the first time since Katrina, water bills to go out in St. Bernard Parish For the first time since Hurricane Katrina slammed St. Bernard Parish, the parish is sending out residential water bills. The bills will mark the costs of water consumption beginning May 1, Chris Merkl, director of Public Works said in a parish government news release. About 5,000 homes will receive bills. Businesses have been receiving water bills for months. Payments can be made at the water department at 1111 East St. Bernard Highway in Chalmette. No payments can be made online but Merkl said the department is exploring the possibility. Just as before the hurricane, water can be disconnected if no payment is made on an account for two months, he said. Also, residents who have left St. Bernard will soon be able to get refunds of their old deposits on their water meters, Merkl said. He said people buying homes in St. Bernard are required to go to the water department and place a deposit in their name or the water to the new home will be disconnected. Deposits run roughly $75 depending on the size of the meter, Merkl said in the news release. Read here

UN cites federal goverment's poor response after Katrina
The United Nations Human Rights Committee cited the U.S. government’s poor response to disadvantaged citizens after Hurricane Katrina in an advisory report issued Friday. The international panel called on federal officials to step up its efforts to provide housing, education and health-care to people displaced by the storm. Several New Orleans activists who traveled to Geneva, Switzerland to lobby U.N. officials for a statement about Katrina applauded the results at a press conference Friday in a badly flooded and largely vacant section of Gert Town. Business group trying to recruit 20,000 construction workers
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Amid a desperate shortage of labor to rebuild the Gulf Coast following hurricanes Katrina and Rita, a business group launched an effort Friday to recruit and train up to 20,000 new construction workers for the region. ... Boston, MA - October 03, 2005 - TD Banknorth Garden - Bono spoke a lot about Aids and his One campaign and how Tom Brady of the Patriots was the 2 millionth member to join The One campaign before the show. Bono joked that Tom wanted to wear the cool "One" rubber thing around his wrist to help him with his football. He also joked that the rumor The Edge was rooting for Carolina in Super Bowl 37 wasnt true and that if Tom Brady still had a problem with The Edge that Edge would meet him at the place of his choice and that they could settle it like real men. (Edge was next to Bono during this swinging his guitar like a baseball bat) Bono then warned Brady that he has known Edge for a long time and you don't want to mess with a man that makes his living using hand to eye coordination. Unemployment climbing in N.O. - Metrowide rate hits 7.2% as storm still taking toll on jobs While unemployment fell statewide last month, The jobless rate in the New Orleans area rose to 7.2 percent, up from 6.4 percent in May, according to figures released Tuesday by the state Department of Labor. Last month's unemployment rate is higher than the 6.1 percent level of a year ago. Bono, a Man in Full
In reviewing any act, but especially a new one, a critic is looking for specific qualities: originality, purpose, depth, craft — and the potential to make memorable music for years to come. U2 had all that when I first saw them at the old Country Club in Reseda early in 1981. The music spoke powerfully of youthful awakening at a time when many were losing faith in rock. I interviewed Bono a few months later and found a remarkably focused and articulate 20-year-old. He had an innate curiosity about life, and that extended to Los Angeles and its culture. His one request was to go to an old-fashioned drive-in restaurant. And so we went to Bob's Big Boy in Toluca Lake, where he had two servings of the ice cream hot fudge cake. A few years later, with U2's popularity soaring, I caught them at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. Influenced by Bruce Springsteen's emotional performances, Bono was looking for his own way of embracing the audience. Riding the energy of the crowd, at one point he raced to the balcony and jumped over the rail and into the arms of fans below. Two fans leaped from the balcony behind him. That night I wrote in my review: "When you have music as purposeful as U2's, you don't need a sideshow, especially a potentially dangerous one." A few days later, Bono phoned to say the sideshow was going to stop — that the rest of the band was on his case too. Over the years, we kept in touch. On the morning after "The Joshua Tree" won a Grammy, we had a late breakfast in a coffee shop just off Central Park in New York. He was excited, not just about the success of "The Joshua Tree" but also about all the things he wanted to do — screenplays, books, plays. I loved his enthusiasm but worried that it might mean the end of U2. He had written a few great songs, but nothing that would leave a musical legacy as rich as Cole Porter's or Hank Williams'. The point was, I told him, he was just beginning. Bono was quiet. So, I was surprised eight years later to read about him recounting the conversation in Bill Flanagan's book "U2: At the End of the World." "That reprimand rattles around Bono's head," Flanagan wrote. "He is still wrestling with it." Things had changed when I interviewed Bono last year. It was at the Chateau Marmont a few days after the start of the band's world tour, and the subject was Bono's crusade to combat Third World poverty. As he talked, I thought about how the singer had been ridiculed in the '80s for his spiritual and idealistic views. By the end of the '90s, when the band's popularity was secure, Bono began meeting with world leaders, encouraging them to tackle poverty issues. It wasn't a role he wanted, he told me, but one he felt compelled to follow. "Look," he said with a smile, "I'm tired of Bono too, and I'm Bono." "...After talking with The Edge, the band flew me over to Dublin to meet them at The Factory, their recording studio. I hadn't even thought of telling the group that I was then working with that I might be quitting but now I was interviewed by all four members of U2 and Paul McGuinness. It was very freaky! I had never been interrogated by a whole band like this before. They asked me questions for like a couple of hours and then I got to watch them rehearse and I loved it. Man, they were really good - and I didn't have any of their albums either. I had to fly back to the US the next morning but Dennis Sheehan rang me in The Blooms Hotel and said Edge wanted me to stay on. It was a big decision for me so I called Bill Graham. He was then a San Francisco Area promoter, a friend of mine and the manager of the band I was touring with, Lanyard Skynyrd. I respected him and asked him what I should do. I asked a couple of other friends too - ringing them from my hotel room. They all said, 'Drop everything. Whatever you are doing, it doesn't matter: if U2 are asking you to stay, you have to stay.' And that's how it all began. A hundred-fold more intense, so much more responsibility, so many guitars and total flattery. Edge's trust in me and his relationship with me, it's so much more called upon than any other band I have ever worked with. With anyone else I care for the guitars, tune the guitars, take them up on stage and leave them to the musician but with Edge it is all that and also about creating sounds with him and my documenting all of his creativity..and quickly. It is about knowing, from the vast U2 library of U2 songs, what guitar Edge needs for which songs, what sounds he needs to create at what point in the show - what guitar to give to Edge when he looks at me from the stage. This band can play songs in 3 different pitches and one has to know - and quickly - what song U2 plays in which pitch and have that pitch-dedicated guitar ready. And in the studio on the latest record that was the greatest thing I had ever done - Bono or sometimes Edge or the producer would say,..'Have you got any ideas for guitar sounds that would reflect the spirit of this track ?' That was flattering you know! Sometimes it would be shite what I did, but sometimes it would work! I wouldn't miss any opportunity to work with Edge for the world. U2’s Vertigo Tour Hits The Road Again!
It's official! At last we can confirm the rescheduled Vertigo//2006 shows. U2 will hit the road again in November. Starting in Brisbane on November 7th , U2 will play further dates in Australia, New Zealand and Japan before finishing in Hawaii on December 9. Kanye West will join the band in Australia and New Zealand while Special Guests, Pearl Jam will join Rocco and the Devils for December 9 in Honolulu. These show dates are rescheduled following the postponement of Vertigo//2006 earlier in the year. For full ticket information in your area please see below. “We are very happy to announce the rescheduling and appreciate everyone’s patience.” said Arthur Fogel, of TNA. The Vertigo Tour opened in San Diego in March 2005, is set for a grand finish in Hawaii with the addition of Pearl Jam. “It’s going to be a great night in Hawaii,” said Paul McGuinness, U2’s manager. “The band are really pleased Pearl Jam could join the bill, a great end to what has already been a very successful tour.” The new show dates are as follows:

During a show I am up and down those five steps from my position under the stage position and onto the stage 47 times - and that's just for guitar changes. Edge World under the stage here....

"...I carry a total of 46 Edge selected guitars on the VERTIGO tour with 35 prepared for each show. Edge for the most part on this tour plays between 15 to 18 different ones but every guitar also has a spare in case of problems and all these have to be ready to be put into the show. They are all high end vintage guitars and when I bring vintage appreciators to see them, their jaws drop. It's not so funny but on tours where I have had a problem with Edge's department during a show and Bono suddenly starts saying over the microphone, 'Dallas, sort Edge out can you?' And Edge and I look at each other as if to say, 'Yeah, Bono you don't have to tell everyone here - we are fixing it - just give us a second!' But that's Bono's way and I have to deal with that sometimes!' Some nights there are between 18 different guitars within 23 songs. My responsibility is to have them all tuned and cleaned and ready to go. It is challenging because if you do the math there is only a certain amount of time in the show day and each instrument requires 20 to 30 minutes to prepare. Some of the 'more challenging' moments are when - if Bono calls an audible (a song that he wants U2 to perform that has not been selected in that particular night's show song list) I don't know if Adam and Stewart (Adam's guitar tech) have got the same understanding of the pitch of the song as me nor what bass Adam has selected to play for that song. Stewart and I talk a lot so we get it right but if I handed Edge a guitar and it was tuned differently that could be embarrassing! In the show I have a microphone to talk to 'Monitor World' so that when Edge tells me cues - less guitar, more drums, whatever - I call to Monitor World with the instruction - and I keep a mix in my ear so I can sometimes tell them before Edge tells me. It's more when he has a lead caught or other things come up but all this up and onstage and down and offstage keeps me in shape. Maybe as well as my swimming ? This position is not one for an idle guitar roadie! I know quite a few guitar technicians in the world and when they come to one of our U2 shows and see exactly what I do in The Edge department, they cannot believe what is required. ' there is so much going on. Take the vintage guitars for example, they are hard to tune and they react to the weather and one might have gone out of tune but you have it in your hand and you know it is being used in the next song! You have to calm yourself down because you are still giving Edge sounds with your feet -- and yet you have also to retune a guitar. Doesn't matter that you're in the wild and crazy heart of New Orleans' French Quarter, there are some things you can't do at 726 St. Peter Street's Preservation Hall. You can't sip sazeracs - no drinks are sold. You can't order gumbo - no food is served. And you can't make a reservation - you have to sweat in line like everybody else. There are, however, two things you can do at Preservation Hall: You can feast your ears on some of the finest traditional New Orleans jazz the big Easy has to offer and you can bring the kids. At least that's what you could have done before Hurricane Katrina's devastating landfall on August 29, 2005. While the folks who rebuilt 726 St. Peter Street after the Battle of New Orleans in 1812 knew a little something about building structures to last, Katrina flooding closed the doors of Preservation Hall and it was feared they might remain shut indefinitely. Help was needed to preserve Preservation Hall. If the Lord works in mysterious ways, it might be a trait He picked up from the music business. Within a month or so of the horror wrought by the Gulf Coast Hurricanes, the Music Rising program (established by Gibson Guitar Chairman and CEO Henry Juszkiewicz, U2 guitarist, the Edge, and producer Bob Ezrin), had already helped more than 1,100 musicians in New Orleans recover from the loss of their equipment. "We felt compelled to help musicians restore their livelihood after seeing such devastation in the media and hearing how much was lost. While to not help these musicians would literally put music history at a standstill, restoring instruments for the musicians of such a vibrant part of our country was an opportunity to make sure the music indeed continues to rise for all to enjoy for many years to come," says Juszkiewicz. And that was just the beginning. Among its many efforts to help those who suffered at the hands of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Music Rising also heeded the call to help preserve Preservation Hall. Gibson Guitar. The Edge. Traditional New Orleans jazz. Mysterious ways at work? Not to Henry Juszkiewicz: "Preservation Hall has such tradition and history with the city of New Orleans and much of the music we hear today. It was only fitting that Gibson Guitar and Music Rising paid tribute to the music it has given the world with support in helping it reopen after the Hurricane disasters of 2005." On April 27, 2006, the music tradition known as Preservation Hall celebrated both its reopening and its 45th anniversary. Photographer Joseph A. While maybe not all of the music lovers who've sat in the wooden chairs of Preservation Hall without food, drink or air conditioning were aware of the Hall's place in music history, there's one thing they could tell you about the experience: If your foot ain't tappin', you got no pulse.
